SCAT (Santa Fe Compost Action Team—Composting)
Project Description
Participation in this project requires successful completion of the Master Composter Volunteer Training course. Graduates of this program are certified to provide public education on home composting at various public events throughout the year. SCAT members also maintain the Compost Demonstration Site on the SF County Extension campus on a weekly basis throughout the year and offer monthly educational composting clinics to the general public and SFEMG members there, April through October. Finished compost is offered to other SFEMG projects upon request.
Project Goal
To increase knowledge and use of composting by Santa Fe residents in order to increase recycling of waste and improve garden soils in Santa Fe.
Work Schedule:
Certification requirement is participation in at least 2 SCAT Public education (PE) events; 6 hours of organizational support (OS) and 1 SCAT approved continuing education(CE) event annually.
SCAT. SFEMG Master Composter Certification Training
PE occurs throughout the city/county. Planned events are compost education tables at community events during EarthWeek(April), the SFEMG Garden Fair(May), SF County Fair(Aug), farmers markets (summer) and others as requested and approved. Compost Clinics occur monthly at the demonstration site. Classes may be offered on specific topics related to composting. Events vary in length; staffing is usually arranged in 2-hour blocks. OS includes assisting with maintaining the compost demonstration site, attending monthly SCAT planning meetings, and various organizational & leadership activities.
