Piñon Needle Scale males emerge in late February and early March to mate with the females migrating to the trunk to lay their eggs. The crawlers emerge in May to make their way back up the trunk to settle on last year’s needle growth.

CODLING MOTH MONITORING   The Santa Fe County Extension Service started the monitoring project in the spring of 2019 to help growers and homeowners monitor and control this widespread pest. Participants in the project report the date of BIOFIX – the date on which at least 2 moths have been trapped on 2 consecutive days. They then receive notification when 250 Degree Days (the start of egg hatch for the first generation of moths) have been accumulated at a nearby weather station. At that point, various management approaches can be initiated.

The range of biofix dates in 2024 around Santa Fe was May 1st to May 28th, with several observations falling on May 19th.

The cumulative degree days at Santa Fe Municipal Airport (began March 1, 2024):

May 1            121.5

May 15          224.0

May 31          450.0

June 15 795.5

June 30 1159.0

July 15 1519.0

July 30 1908.5

 August 15 2276.5

August 31 2260.0
