Santa Fe Public Spaces Tree Inventory

Project Description

Learning about our urban forest is fun and rewarding. The Santa Fe Public Spaces Tree Inventory works in liaison with the City of Santa Fe Municipal Tree Board to inventory the city trees, beginning with the parks system. By collecting species, diameter, condition, and location data, we are learning to identify trees, pests that afflict the trees and troubleshoot factors influencing tree health. Tree identification and data collection workshops teach master gardeners, interns, and public as well as build leadership in this citizen science effort. The community driven approach to collection ripples into the private gardens of our urban forest through proper species selection and knowledge of tree care. This project helps to build the urban forest through local education, while also providing the information to the Parks Division for further assessment, follow-up maintenance, and good decision making.

Project Goals

We gather tree data from city parks and provide this information to the Parks Division and the Municipal Tree Board. We engage others and teach workshops on urban forestry topics. Our goal is to complete all city parks in 7 years.

Tree Identification Workshops:

We host two or three urban forestry workshops each year. Specialists teach on a variety of topics. Past topics include: Tree Plotter Software, Tree Identification, Integrated Pest and Pollinator Management, Spring Field Identification, Leaf Edges, Bark ID, Western Conifers, Deciduous Trees, and many more.

Many of our colleagues also host workshops. If you are presenting on a tree-related topic and would like the presentation to be considered for Master Gardener Continuing Education credit, please contact us at sfemg1@gmail.com !

Tree Inventory Sessions:

The Inventory Sessions are designed to learn about trees and conditions in the park system while cataloging information using Tree Plotter. Dates are updated through SignUp Genius.
